Finding ourselves in San Francisco on a Saturday morning and not wanting to eat breakfast in our hotel, we walked to a nearby cafe, The Hollywood Cafe. It was a Saturday morning not quite 8 o’clock and there was already a line out the door. That’s a good sign if you’re looking for a good breakfast, not so good if you are starving! Part of the reason for the line is because it is very small inside and there are a few tables outside. We put our name on the list and since we said we would be willing to sit outside, we only had to wait a few minutes.
We soon learned why outside seating was so available. If you sit facing out, you are just a few inches away from the people standing in line. So, there you are eating while someone is looking longingly at your food. Also, within just a few minutes, the sun had risen above the buildings in front and was right in my eyes. If you are going to eat outside in the morning, I would suggest facing the restaurant, if you don’t want people looking right at you and sun in your eyes.
When it comes to the food however, there was nothing lacking. My husband got the James Dean – which was two eggs, bacon, toast and fruit. His eggs were cooked perfectly as was the bacon. I got the Marilyn Monroe – which was french toast and fruit. Oh my gosh. The french toast was excellent, crispy on the outside, perfect on the inside. The show stopper however was the fruit. The fruit cup was literally overflowing onto my plate. It was filled with raspberries, blackberries, watermelon, oranges, apples, bananas, kiwi, grapefruit, and cantaloup. It goes on record as the most beautiful breakfast that I’ve ever eaten!! It was the perfect way to start a glorious Saturday in San Francisco.
