Capsule Wardrobe Neutrals
If you are just joining me in my Capsule Wardrobe journey, you can find the rest of my posts, under the category Capsule Wardrobe under Fashion. I’ve talked about my reasons for starting a Capsule Wardrobe, the first step closet purge and what I chose to do about accessories. Now, I’m going to talk about the next step of building your Capsule Wardrobe – choosing your neutrals.
I will talk more about this in a later post, but not buying enough neutrals was one of the main reasons that I had a closet full of clothes, but felt like I had nothing to wear. It’s neutrals that provide the backbone of your wardrobe. Common neutrals are black, white, gray, navy, brown and beige. Other colors can be considered neutral like denim and chambray. When I started thinking about a capsule wardrobe, I knew that I wanted to focus mainly on neutrals. I liked the simplicity and ease that they brought. That is the main reason I chose the French Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe. It’s all neutrals. The colors are black, white, gray and chambray. No bright pops of color (though I could add them if I choose, no one says you can’t break a rule or two.)
In choosing your neutrals, look at your closet. You will probably find that you have naturally leaned towards certain neutrals. I always favored black and white, so they were a natural fit for me. Whatever you decide on, pick 3-4 neutral colors. Decide what you want for bottoms – skirts, capris, shorts, and pants. Maybe two skirts, two capris, four shorts and two pants – it’s up to you. Maybe you never wear shorts, only capris. Make it your own. Then choose 5 or 6 tops in your neutral colors and 1 or 2 dresses. It takes a little time to plan out and decide, which is one of the reasons I went with an already made plan. It just made it simpler for me. The beauty of it is that you can sub whatever you want. Just this simple step of choosing neutrals as the base of your wardrobe is huge. It makes all the difference in the world. I bet you are already seeing your capsule wardrobe come together!
Let’s talk about what I’m wearing in today’s post. So simple and so easy to put together. This was outfit #39 with white skinnies subbed for the white shorts. I loved the trendy addition of the chambray cold shoulder top. I didn’t find a cold shoulder top, but I did find a peasant blouse from Velvet Heart that could be worn off shoulder. I found both the Velvet Heart Top and the White Premise Skinnies from Steinmart. I paired them with some classic Adidas that I found at Marshall’s.

Thanks!
Wonderful blog and I just may start a capsule wardrobe!
Hi Pam 🙂
I’ve been catching up with you and I can’t believe you’re 59! You look insanely young! I was a black and white girl too and when I wear “normal” clothes that’s what I still wear. I think I have 10 black t-shirts and one blue lol
I hear you one the not getting rid of accessories. I’m 47 and some of it is just too hard to part with.
Anyway, good luck!

Well done, this is not something that works with me, I love to have loads of choice. Love your outfit, especially the top. x Jacqui

The idea behind a capsule wardrobe is appealing. Love the ruffled top and the white jeans look great on you. I find I am wearing white jeans more often and thoughtout the year.
