Maxi Skirts Yay or Nay?

By Pam Greer 12 Comments

Maxi Skirt with long sleeve t-shirt

A long time ago, I read that you shouldn’t wear clothing that comes back in style, if you wore it when it was originally in style.  Personally I think that is ridiculous.  Take the maxi skirt for example.  I remember wearing them in the 1970’s.  I loved them.  Cooler than jeans, yet you’re covered up.  They are comfortable on a hot day and comfortable on a spring evening when there is a nip in the air.  Like now.  There is quite a nip in the air.  Yet, I’ve already made the switch to brighter colors and I simply can’t bring myself to put on winter clothes.  This Lauren Conrad maxi skirt paired with a long sleeve t-shirt from Target is perfect.

Franco Sarto Flats

I decided the perfect shoe would be these gray Franco Sarto flats.  They go perfect with the maxi skirt and they are so comfortable.

So, what do you think about my original quote – about not wearing something that you originally wore when it was in style.  Kind of hogwash, don’t you think?   Though on further thought, I can think of somethings that it might apply to.  Short shorts, for example.  I used to wear the shortest of shorts and mini skirts too.  Oh, and crop tops.  I’m not saying someone else in their 50’s can’t wear those things, but for me, it’s not going to happen.  Maxi skirts though, that’s going to happen!

I’m a no to maxi skirts because it doesn’t fit my style and I’m short (5’3″) so I always feel like I’m lost in fabric! But, loving your shoes!

Your skirt looks great on you. I do like maxi skirts, but I think I don’t love the one I currently own. I think I might need to try on a few more 🙂

Maxis to the max! My hubs is always complimenting me on mine and says he thinks they are the most feminine item I wear. I tend to agree. Great for days when I am feeling girly and want to be comfy!

Don’t you wonder who started that saying in the first place? Probably the same person that came up with not wearing white after Labor Day…
Although I can see the idea that once it went out of style, it was on your “out of style” radar…and maybe it’s hard to reconsider those things?
But I’m loving the maxis too—-really, they are so perfect for the older generations, besides looking hip for the younger ages!
    Love your outfit!! jodie
