I don’t remember much about the book, The Bag Lady Papers: The Priceless Experience of Losing It All, except that at one point she said that she had 47 white cotton shirt.  While 47 might be a bit much, there is some wisdom in this.  A simple white cotton shirt can be the backbone of a basic closet.  When all else fails, I know I can put on a white cotton shirt and I am good to go.  Sometimes the shirt takes the form of a tunic or a bit fancier with pintucks.

Think about it, what other shirt in your closet can you toss without even thinking about it?  You can dress it up or dress it down.  You can pair it with jeans or classy pencil skirt.  It’s all good.  This look was for a Friday night pizza date.  The weather had warmed up, but there was still a chill in the air.

What I love about this Tommy Hillfiger shirt is the delicate ruffle detailing on the button placard.  It elevates it a little from just a plain white button down.  I paired the shirt with some classic Levi jeans and a comfortable pair of black flats from Tahari.   An effortless look that remains timeless.
